Iowa Chops Logo I just found out today when I went to the Iowa Stars website to see anymore news on their new nickname or whatever. So once I got there, I saw that they changed their name to the Iowa Chops. I was thinking and asking myself why they chose this name and logo at first. But I went on and read further into why they chose this name for the team. The reason was that Iowa is the #1 exporter in the nation in pork, of course. They wanted a name that would associate with Iowa’s roots, instead of names of natural disasters and existing team names. After reading all of that, I like what they did, and I like the logo as well, to where I made a copy through Adobe Illustrator, and you can view it by clicking on the thumbnail image. The Iowa Chops is a hockey team in the AHL (American Hockey League).

UPDATE: I’ve also seen a lot of criticism over both the logo and the name, ESPECIALLY the name. Yes, it’s original and it’s something that has never been thought up for a sports team… or has it? I know another team in the Midwest region that has it’s name and logo associated with meat, and I hear no one or no fan complain about it, especially when I went to see one of their games when I was on vacation this summer. They are called the Kansas City T-Bones. It’s a baseball team that was created a few years ago and is in the Northern League, which is an independent professional baseball league. But probably when they announced that team’s name, they might had a few criticisms over it, but as time went on, I didn’t hear any complaints. I liked the team so much, I was wanting to buy a jersey, but didn’t want to spend a $100 right now. Heck, even their mascot is a bull named Sizzle! But I think that it’s a creative name for a mascot.

People will get use to the name eventually in the next few years, and they won’t complain about it. People just need to get over it. As a logo designer and as a creative person, I say that this is a cool and creative approach, and something VERY original, which my instructors always advise other students to do which is to come up with originality.

A blog at Yahoo! was really criticizing about the name, and why the Chops abbreviated the name. They thought it was cute to have the team really named after some Church program. These are the kinds of people that really don’t have taste for originality, really, even if they call themselves “experts”, which they are not after all. As you might have known, I’m a native Iowan who lived in Iowa for most of my life up until 2005, and I know the culture there. My dad has been a farm boy all his life and always tells me that pork is Iowa’s biggest export. I can understand why Schiegel Sports chose this name and wanted it to associate with Iowa’s roots.
